Human-Layer Cybersecurity Resilience

Cyber resilience starts with people

Most cyber incidents begin with a human moment. Cyber Innovations equips organisations with the knowledge, skills, and psychological resilience to prevent, respond to, and recover from cyber threats.

Why human-layer matters

74% of data breaches involve a human element, including social engineering, error, or misuse
82% of organisations say their people, not technology, are the weakest link in their cyber defences
3 in 4 staff who receive standard awareness training cannot apply it under real incident conditions

"Traditional awareness training tells people what cyber threats look like. Cyber Self Defence prepares them for what it feels like to face one." Emily Rosenorn-Lanng, Founder, Cyber Innovations Ltd.

82%

of breaches involve a human factor

Yet most organisations respond with compliance tick-box training that does not prepare people for the reality of an incident.

The problem we solve

Traditional training leaves people unprepared

Cyber awareness training tells people what threats look like. It rarely prepares them for what it feels like to face a real incident, under pressure, with unclear information, and the stakes high.

Stress impairs response

Incidents trigger a psychological stress response that degrades decision-making precisely when clear thinking matters most.

Knowledge does not equal action

Knowing what a phishing email looks like does not predict whether someone will act correctly when one lands in a pressured, overloaded inbox.

One-off training fades fast

Annual awareness training is forgotten within weeks. Without reinforcement, tools, and practice, people revert to unhelpful defaults under pressure.

Our Programmes

A human-layer resilience ecosystem

Not one product, but a connected set of programmes and tools, designed to build cyber resilience from the inside out.

Game-Based Learning

CyGamBIT

An interactive scenario-based learning game that makes cybersecurity education engaging and memorable for schools, charities, SMEs, and beyond. Innovate UK CyberASAP funded, co-developed with Bournemouth University.

Why Cyber Innovations

We treat cyber resilience as a human problem

Three things set our work apart from standard cyber awareness training.

01

Practical and accessible

Our training is designed for real people in real organisations, not just IT teams. Cyber Self Defence builds capability across your entire workforce, making incident response understandable, actionable, and sustainable at every level.

02

Grounded in original research

Everything we do is built on published academic work. Cyber Self Defence is structured around the Human Layer Kill Chain, a model developed by our founders and published in 2025, combining behavioural science, psychological resilience, and incident response methodology.

03

Human-centred by design

Most cyber incidents begin with a human moment, not a technical failure. Our training addresses the stress, decision-making, and confidence that determine how people actually respond when something goes wrong, not just what they know in theory.

About Cyber Innovations Ltd.

To empower people with the knowledge, confidence, and psychological resilience to navigate cyber threats, through practical training, academic rigour, and human-centred design.

Cyber Innovations Ltd. is a cybersecurity education company rooted in research at Bournemouth University, redefining how organisations learn to respond to digital threats. We design practical, psychologically informed training, playbooks, and toolkits that help teams prevent, detect, and recover from incidents.

What we bring together

Cybersecurity incident response, structured to be accessible to non-technical staff.

Psychology and resilience science, translated into practical training tools and frameworks.

Original academic research, including the Human Layer Kill Chain (Katos et al., 2025).

Human-centred design, with learning experiences built for trust, inclusion, and lasting behaviour change.

Research Foundation

Built on original academic work

Our training and toolkit products are informed by two conceptual models developed by the Cyber Innovations research team, grounded in real-world incident data and published research.

Human Layer Kill Chain (HLKC)

A framework for modelling the attacker's approach through human vulnerabilities, identifying where people can intervene at each stage of an attack. The core model underpinning Cyber Self Defence.

Sociotechnical Kill Plane (STKP)

Combines the HLKC with Lockheed Martin's Cyber Kill Chain to map attacks across both technical and human dimensions, enabling more targeted training and resource design.
